Opinion Piece: Northern Community Leaders Can Assist Unionist Politicians in Stepping Down from their Firm Brexit Stances

The Good Friday Agreement, celebrated for its 25th anniversary, still faces obstacles when it comes to advancing political compromise during the marching season in Ireland and Britain. However, it is important to recognize that the incidents of burning flags and disrespectful behavior at some marches represent the actions of a minority, overshadowing the larger well-conducted celebrations in the unionist communities.

While some people in Ireland struggle to empathize with the Orange tradition and the loyalist people celebrating their traditions in the North, it is crucial to promote acceptance of cultural diversity from all sides of the island. Lasting peace and prosperity can only be achieved if there is respect for the rights of unionist and loyalist communities to celebrate and march peacefully.

Over the years, the Orange Order and its associated affiliates have influenced the politics of unionism, with varying levels of engagement from key unionist political leaders. However, the current state of unionist communities in the North is characterized by divisions and a lack of political engagement. The Democratic Unionist Party’s continued boycott of Stormont amidst various challenges, such as healthcare and education, is seen by many as politically bankrupt.

Furthermore, the Orange and loyal orders have staunchly opposed Brexit compromises, marginalizing the DUP in the process. With the possibility of British Labour leading the next UK government and Sinn Féin leading in Dublin, there is growing pressure for the DUP to re-evaluate its stance on Brexit sooner rather than later.

In this critical time, the Orange and loyal orders can contribute to positive change by toning down their rhetoric, responsibly managing their marches and bonfires, and fostering realpolitik among supporters of the UK in the North. This marching season can serve as an unlikely but significant turning point for a better future.
