Opinion | Essential Considerations Regarding Mitt Romney: A Comprehensive Guide

While reading the recent excerpt from McKay Coppins’s forthcoming biography of Mitt Romney, I was struck by the profound contempt and disdain the Utah senator holds for much of the Republican Party, including his colleagues in the Senate.

He openly condemned their vanity, venality, and cowardice. According to Coppins, every time Romney criticized Trump publicly, a Republican senator would hypocritically approach him privately to express solidarity. Romney also highlighted the “rank cynicism” among his Republican colleagues and their refusal to take a stand on anything that could jeopardize their future electoral prospects. However, his harshest words were reserved for Republican senators who were willing to sacrifice principles for political power and influence.

What particularly bothered Romney about Hawley and his cohorts was their disingenuousness. “They know better!” he told me. “Josh Hawley is one of the smartest people in the Senate, if not the smartest, and Ted Cruz could give him a run for his money.” Romney believed they were too intelligent to genuinely believe that Trump had won the 2020 election. Hawley and Cruz, he said, were prioritizing politics over the interests of liberal democracy and the Constitution.

As for the current generation of Republicans, Romney expressed extreme disrespect for J.D. Vance.

Considering the surprisingly harsh and unsparing nature of Romney’s criticism, it’s worth questioning if he is indirectly criticizing himself as well, despite still being an active participant in American political life.

On the occasion of Romney’s retirement announcement this week, there have been numerous odes, retrospectives, and more or less hagiographic assessments of his political career, all highlighting his admirable opposition to Donald Trump. After all, Romney was the first senator in American history to vote for the removal of a president from his own party.
