Moviegoers had a wide range of options to choose from over the Father’s Day weekend, resulting in a varied box office performance.

Warner Bros.’ latest superhero film, “The Flash,” earned a modest $55 million during its opening weekend. This fell short of industry expectations of $75 million to $85 million, and also trailed behind the $67 million debut of fellow DC film “Black Adam” last October.

Shawn Robbins, chief analyst at BoxOffice.com, stated, “‘The Flash’ suffered due to various factors that decreased the excitement surrounding the film. These factors include the Ezra Miller controversy, inconsistency within the DC film franchise, and a marketing campaign that only targeted die-hard fans, resulting in a lower-than-anticipated box office opening.”

Robbins added, “Audiences have become more selective when it comes to choosing which comic book films to support at the box office, especially in the post-‘Endgame’ era.”

Another film that faced a lackluster response from audiences was Disney’s “Elemental.” It is expected to have one of the lowest openings for a wide-released Pixar film, with estimates placing its debut at $29.5 million. This is slightly higher than the $29.1 million debut of Pixar’s first-ever theatrical release, “Toy Story,” in 1995.

Robbins commented, “‘Elemental’s’ underwhelming debut is not surprising, considering Pixar’s ongoing rebranding efforts after a series of streaming releases during the pandemic.”

Pixar is also facing strong competition from rival animation studios, such as Universal’s Illumination and DreamWorks. These studios have achieved box office success with films like “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish,” and “Minions: The Rise of Gru.”

On the other hand, Sony’s “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” has been capturing audiences since its release on June 2. The film generated an estimated $27.8 million over the weekend and has earned a total of $489.3 million globally.

Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore, remarked, “Despite no breakout hits among the new wide releases, this weekend stood out due to the sheer number of movies and the diverse demographics attracted to theaters.”

Other films contributing to the Father’s Day weekend box office include Paramount’s “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” with an additional $20 million, Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” with $11.6 million, and Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3” with $5 million.

Based on data from Comscore, the domestic box office is expected to reach just under $175 million over the Father’s Day weekend, marking a 5% increase compared to the same period in 2022 and a 28% increase from 2019.

Dergarabedian concluded, “Father’s Day weekend, although lacking a record-breaking blockbuster, was a successful one for movie theaters. The appealing selection of films resulted in a fantastic overall weekend for the industry.”
