Indonesia has granted its first “Golden Visa” to Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI. This initiative was launched to attract foreign investment to Southeast Asia’s largest economy.

According to Silmy Karim, Indonesia’s Director General of Immigration, the “Golden Visa” is one of several categories apart from investment-based visas. It is given to individuals with international recognition who can contribute to Indonesia’s development and provide benefits to the country.

Altman’s “Golden Visa” is valid for ten years. This prestigious status grants him privileges such as priority screening at airports throughout the country’s extensive archipelago, longer stays, and easier entry and exit procedures.

Altman, alongside Elon Musk, is the co-founder of OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT. Earlier this year, Altman visited Indonesia as part of a tour that included major cities in Asia, such as Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul, and Singapore.

ChatGPT, an AI chatbot, has gained popularity for its ability to generate responses that imitate human interaction. Within two months of its launch, it amassed over 100 million users.

Altman and other prominent technology leaders recently penned an open letter highlighting the critical risk that AI poses to human existence, on par with nuclear war. They emphasize the urgent need to prioritize strategies for mitigating these risks globally.
