The future of OpenAI remains uncertain as efforts to oust the board and reinstate co-founder Sam Altman failed after significant backlash from employees and investors.

By Monday’s end, 747 out of 770 OpenAI employees had signed a letter threatening to quit and join Microsoft if the three directors refused to resign and reinstate Altman.

Meanwhile, venture capitalists supporting OpenAI were exploring legal measures to force the board to reverse its decision, as the board remained steadfast in their choice to dismiss Altman.

The sacking of Altman has caused a significant crisis for Silicon Valley’s premier startup, which has not yet reached a resolution. The AI company has garnered interest from competitors due to its recent challenges.

Despite this, Microsoft has committed to hiring Altman, Brockman, and other OpenAI staff for a new AI research subsidiary, should the board refuse to converse.

On Sunday night, Emmett Shear was appointed interim chief executive, following Mira Murati’s promotion on Friday. The situation remains tense, with major players such as Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella backing Altman.

Nadella stated that Altman would be able to pursue his side projects while working at Microsoft. Altman has a nuclear fission venture and a cryptocurrency project and has sought to start a device company and a chip business, according to sources familiar with the matter.

Amidst all the chaos, the uncertainty and the need for a resolution at OpenAI becomes even more pronounced, as the future of the company hangs in the balance.
