Online Debate Ignited by Controversial Photo of Connecticut McDonald’s $18 Big Mac Meal

A photo of a McDonald’s menu at a Connecticut rest stop went viral recently due to the exorbitant prices displayed. The photo, taken by Twitter user Sam Learner, shows a Big Mac combo meal priced at $17.59, while other combo meals, like the Quarter Pounder with bacon and cheese, are priced at $18.99. These prices may seem high, especially considering McDonald’s reputation for affordable food and their $1 menu.

Upon discovering the expensive McDonald’s in Darien, Learner decided to research the company’s prices further. He tweeted that he may have stumbled upon the most expensive McDonald’s in the country. Using data from Pantry and Larder, a food research site, Learner found that a McDonald’s in Lee, Massachusetts lists a Big Mac for $8.09, while the Darien location prices it at $8.29.

According to SavingSpot, the US has the 19th most expensive Big Mac in the world, with an average cost of $5.35. Sweden holds the title for the most expensive Big Mac at $7.75.

Social media users expressed their outrage at Learner’s post, with some comparing the Darien prices to McDonald’s in their own areas. It was noted that the rest stop location prices could be inflated, while others blamed the expensive prices on the high cost of living in Connecticut and specifically in Darien.

At a standalone McDonald’s location in Stamford, just 10 miles from Darien, a Big Mac meal with fries and a soft drink costs $11.79 on GrubHub, which is above the national average. Meanwhile, at the Darien rest stop location, the same meal costs a whopping $21.59 on GrubHub. The Darien location consistently shows above-average prices for various menu items.

The price differences between McDonald’s locations are influenced by the owners, as around 90% of McDonald’s locations are independently owned and have the freedom to set their own prices. This explains why prices vary depending on the location. The prices at the Darien location on the Connecticut Turnpike take into account the costs associated with operating a McDonald’s on a highway.

The states with the highest average Big Mac prices are Hawaii at $5.31 and New York at $5.23, while Mississippi has the cheapest at $3.91.

CBS News has reached out to McDonald’s corporate and the Darien location for comment and is awaiting a response.
