One Year Ago Today (October 2, 2022)… Relatives of a worker killed during a 2021 explosion at a Fullerton engineering firm are filing a lawsuit against multiple defendants regarding the death of a 29-year-old man from Lynwood. The incident occurred during testing of a fire-fighting system.
The plaintiffs in the Los Angeles Superior Court lawsuit, filed on Wednesday, include Jesus Siordia and Irene Fombona, the parents of Jesse Siordia who tragically passed away. The lawsuit accuses the defendants of negligence, strict products liability, and breach of contract. The plaintiffs are seeking both compensatory and punitive damages, the amounts of which are yet to be determined.
Jesse Siordia was an employee of National Technical Systems (NTS), which provided the building on East Valencia Avenue to United Aeronautical Corp. (UAC), one of its customers, according to the lawsuit. It is important to note that NTS is not named as a defendant in this particular case. As of now, no representative from UAC has been available for comment.
On May 27, 2021, UAC was conducting a test on a C-130 modular airborne fire-fighting system. The purpose of the test was to evaluate the presence of fugitive radio emissions during the system’s operation prior to the expulsion of fire retardant from firefighting aircrafts, as stated in the lawsuit.
During the pressurization of the system while testing, at around 9:15 a.m., a component part of the system failed, leading to the hydrologic fluid inside becoming a highly flammable aerosol. This resulted in a massive explosion, causing the untimely death of Jesse Siordia and significant damage to property, according to the lawsuit.
The suit alleges that UAC and the other defendants made explicit and implicit claims that the component parts of the system met or surpassed safety standards. However, the defendants reportedly demonstrated a “conscious disregard” for Jesse Siordia’s safety by providing a dangerous and defective product for testing in a “reckless, willful, and negligent manner.” The suit argues that the defendants were aware or should have been aware that the product was unsafe and unfit for the specific testing that was undertaken on the day of the explosion.
