Olympic Runner Strays Off Course Moments Before Reaching the Finish Line

  • An Olympic runner dominated the prestigious Peachtree Road Race in Atlanta on Tuesday, but a crucial wrong turn just before the finish line cost her the victory.
  • Senbere Teferi, a renowned Ethiopian athlete, missed out on the winner’s prize of $10,000 and had to settle for a consolation prize of $3,000.

A video captures the unfortunate moment when Senbere Teferi, an Olympic runner, took a wrong turn right before crossing the finish line during a 10-kilometer race in Atlanta, Georgia. Her misstep not only cost her the win but also thousands of dollars in prize money.

The director of the race, Rich Kenah, disclosed to CNN that Teferi lost focus momentarily, leading to her deviation from the correct route. “She saw a police motorcycle turning off to the right, and when you’re in that kind of competitive battle, your instincts take over, and she followed that right-hand turn,” he explained. Unfortunately, she couldn’t recover fast enough to reclaim the lead, resulting in a third-place finish instead of a first-place triumph.

Senbere Teferi’s wrong turn cost her four precious seconds and relegated her to third place. Additionally, instead of the $10,000 prize awarded to the race winner, she only received $3,000.

The AJC Peachtree Road Races, in a statement posted on social media, acknowledged the possibility of misinterpretation in the heat of competition. They expressed disappointment over the incident, recognizing that mistakes can occur even in well-organized events. Teferi has not yet publicly addressed her mistake.

The race winner, Fotyen Tesfay, also from Ethiopia, expressed her dismay at Teferi’s error, as she had intended to compete neck and neck with her until the finish line. “But after I saw that car turn, I saw the finish sign in front of me, so I pushed ahead. But I was really upset because I really planned to stick with Senbere at the finish,” Tesfay stated.

Tesfay completed the race in 30 minutes and 43 seconds, with Teferi trailing behind by four seconds, according to the official results. Senbere Teferi is a highly regarded Ethiopian athlete with previous Olympic experience.
