Ohio GOP Senate candidate separates from top aide who tweeted criticism of Trump

Frank LaRose, the Republican Ohio Secretary of State and candidate in the highly anticipated Senate race, has terminated his press secretary’s employment after the aide posted critical tweets about former President Trump.

Mary Cianciolo, LaRose’s interim press secretary, confirmed that Rob Nichols is no longer working at the Office of the Ohio Secretary of State, following reports from the Cleveland Plain Dealer and NBC News.

Screen captures of tweets from the account “rnich99” gained attention when an Ohio progressive activist questioned whether Nichols was responsible for the account. NBC News mentioned that individuals close to Nichols confirmed his involvement.

The Hill has attempted to reach out to Nichols for comment.

Trump ally Arthur Schwartz and Andy Surabian, an adviser to Ohio GOP Senate candidate Bernie Moreno, seized the opportunity to highlight the tweets after a liberal blogger from Columbus published an article detailing the posts.

“A current Senior Comms staffer for Ohio Senate candidate Frank LaRose essentially erased his entire account on here, after he was exposed for repeatedly attacking Trump over the past several months. Frank the Fraud and his entire RINO team have always been anti-Trump,” Surabian tweeted on Monday.

Surabian included screenshots of tweets criticizing the former president in response to Trump-aligned Republican consultant Alex Bruesewitz.

“It’s been an incredibly indicting race to the bottom between your guys and Hunter Biden…the Daytona 500 of felonies and misdemeanors,” read one tweet.

Another tweet asked, “how many times has DeSantis been impeached? how many rape settlements has he agreed to? Has he spent $40 million in campaign donor money to pay a bunch of lawyers for his transgressions?”

Trump could potentially play a decisive role in the 2024 Ohio Senate race. Last year, JD Vance, a Republican Senator from Ohio, won the primary for former Senator Rob Portman’s seat after receiving an endorsement from Trump. Although Trump has not yet endorsed anyone for the state’s 2024 GOP primary, he has publicly encouraged Moreno to enter the race.
