Ohio Allocating $1 Million for Solar Eclipse Expenses

Mark your calendars for April 8, 2024 because that’s when one of the most anticipated celestial events, a solar eclipse, will take place. And if you’re looking for the perfect spot to witness this extraordinary event, look no further than Ohio. In preparation for the influx of visitors, USA Today reveals that the state has allocated a budget of $1 million to cover safety and security costs during the eclipse.

The path of totality, which spans 124 miles wide, includes cities like Cleveland, Dayton, and Akron. With millions of Americans expected to stream into Ohio via cars, it’s important to address the potential increase in accidents. In light of this, the Ohio Emergency Management Agency plans to use the $1 million to reimburse cities and towns for emergency management and first responder expenses associated with the eclipse.

Moreover, individual Ohio locations are already making plans to ensure a smooth experience on the big day.

Lorain County, located in Ohio, is taking proactive measures to handle the surge in population during the eclipse. As WKYC reported in January, county officials have recommended closing schools on April 8 when the population is expected to temporarily soar from 312,000 to nearly 1 million people. Lorain’s EMA director emphasized the importance of avoiding traffic congestion, especially around 3:10pm when school traffic can be high. The 2017 eclipse serves as a clear reminder of the traffic problems that could arise.

As Mashable previously pointed out, previous eclipses have caused major traffic snarls in several states along the eclipse path, from Oregon to North Carolina. However, once people make it home after enduring eclipse-viewing traffic, they can take solace in the knowledge that the next solar eclipse visible from the lower 48 states won’t occur until August 2044.

So, mark your calendars, prepare for an unforgettable experience, and be sure to plan ahead to avoid any traffic troubles. (Read more solar eclipse stories.)
