October 2023 Train and Tube Strikes: Discover Which Dates and Services Will be Impacted

Train station ticket office closures

The Rail Delivery Group (RDG) has announced the closure of nearly all railway station ticket offices, with staff being reassigned to platform and concourse duties. Ticket office facilities will only remain open at the busiest stations. Posters are being prominently displayed in stations to inform passengers about the potential closures. A consultation will be held to determine which offices will be axed, with the final decision being made by the Government. Although there is no specific timeline, the closure program is expected to span three years.

Reasons behind Aslef strike

Aslef members are resorting to industrial action in their bid for a pay increase. They have voiced criticism against the government for its failure to engage with their negotiating team, which comprises general secretary Mick Whelan, assistant general secretary Simon Weller, and executive committee president Dave Calfe. The last interaction with representatives from the employers, the Rail Delivery Group, took place in April as part of the agreed post-pandemic framework of the Rail Industry Recovery Group. Mr. Whelan humorously stated, “Do you remember Where’s Wally? Well, what we want to know is Where’s Harper? We last saw the Secretary of State for Transport in December. We last saw Huw Merriman, the Rail Minister, in January. And we last saw the train companies in April. Since then, nothing. Nada. Zilch. Not a letter, not an email, not a text message, not a phone call, not a WhatsApp. Not a word!”
