Pakistani leaders have made an unconventional choice by appointing Senator Anwaarul Haq Kakar as the interim prime minister of the country. This decision was confirmed by the office of outgoing prime minister Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday, and it has surprised many due to Kakar’s limited public profile. The appointment of Kakar is in line with the country’s efforts to ensure fair and transparent elections in the future.

As the interim prime minister, Kakar will be responsible for leading the government until the next general election takes place. This decision was approved by both Sharif and outgoing opposition leader of the National Assembly Raja Riaz, highlighting a consensus among political leaders.

Pakistani President Arif Alvi has officially approved Kakar’s appointment, and the swearing-in ceremony will take place on Sunday. The joint statement issued by Aiwan-e-Sadr (the presidential residence) and Pakistan’s presidential palace confirms that the appointment was made in accordance with Article 224-A of the Constitution.

Kakar’s selection as the interim prime minister is significant as he hails from Balochistan, the largest but least-populated province in Pakistan. This decision aims to address the sense of deprivation in smaller provinces and promote inclusivity.

About Kakar, little information is available. He has been an independent member of the country’s Senate since 2018. In a social media statement, Kakar expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve the people of Pakistan and requested prayers for the strength to fulfill his duties responsibly.

This appointment comes shortly after the disqualification of former prime minister Imran Khan, who was convicted of corruption charges and barred from running for office for five years. The appointment of Kakar will now serve as a transformative phase for Pakistan until the next election is held.
