NYPD Seeks Woman Seen in Viral Video Verbally Confronting Asian Family

  • The NYPD has reported that a woman is being sought for assault following an incident on the F train on August 3rd.
  • A video of the incident went viral, displaying three young women yelling at an Asian family and engaging in a physical altercation with multiple subway passengers.
  • The NYPD stated that one of the women made an offensive comment about the victim’s ethnicity during the altercation.

The NYPD officially announced on Sunday that they are actively searching for a woman who was captured in a viral video shouting at an Asian family and confronting another passenger who was recording the incident.

The NYPD has specified that the woman is wanted for assault. According to a social media post by the police department, the incident took place on the evening of August 3rd on a southbound F train at West 4th Street.

The video shows three young women sitting across from an Asian family with two children, subjecting them to verbal harassment for unknown reasons. The person who filmed the video mentioned in the caption that she started recording because she anticipated that the situation would escalate.

Although the footage cuts out before any violence is shown, the video captures one of the women repeatedly approaching the person filming. “This ferocious one runs over to hit me. I put down my phone to cover my head and took the blow (ow),” stated one of the captions in the video.

Subsequently, the video depicts a brawl involving multiple passengers. As mentioned in the video’s caption, the woman filming was dragged by her hair and physically assaulted multiple times until she managed to roll away.

The incident came to an end at the next subway stop, where all those involved exited the train. The individual who recorded the video mentioned speaking to the mother of the targeted family and sharing the footage to assist in filing a police report.

The video has triggered widespread outrage, particularly in New York City, where there has been a rise in anti-Asian attacks in recent years, causing fear within Asian communities. In response, the NYPD established the Asian Hate Crime Task Force in the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, in light of a sevenfold increase in reports of anti-Asian harassment, discrimination, and violence since February 2020.

According to the NYPD’s social media post, one of the women seen in the video engaged in a “dispute” with a 51-year-old victim, during which she made an offensive remark about the victim’s ethnicity, pulled her hair, and punched her. The police department is urging anyone with information regarding the identity of the woman to come forward.

Insider’s request for additional details about the altercation has not yet received a response from the NYPD.
