In a recent survey of cleanliness in New York City, it has been revealed that certain neighborhoods are in dire need of improvement. HouseFresh, a blog that reviews air purifier products, has ranked the city’s ZIP codes based on their level of grime. Topping the list as the dirtiest ZIP code is 11216, which includes parts of Bedford-Stuyvesant and Crown Heights. This section of Brooklyn has received the most sanitation complaints, with a staggering 7,664 gripes per 100,000 residents.
Interestingly, three of the bottom five neighborhoods are located in Staten Island, far away from the average New Yorker’s view. These neighborhoods are Eltingville (10312), Great Kills (10306), and Pleasant Plains (10309). The Bronx’s Hunts Point (10474) wholesale market district also made the list.
HouseFresh compiled the rankings by analyzing the number of sanitation complaints logged in the city’s 311 system over the past year. On the other end of the spectrum, the cleanest ZIP code in the city, with the fewest complaints, is 11040, located on the border of Queens and New Hyde Park in Nassau County. Roosevelt Island and Floral Park in Queens also made it onto the clean list. Manhattan’s 10010 ZIP code, which serves parts of Stuyvesant Town, Kips Bay, Gramercy, and Flatiron, took home the top prize for cleanliness in Manhattan.
This survey is part of a nationwide examination of sanitation in urban areas across America. New York City ranked 17th out of the major cities surveyed, behind Chicago, Los Angeles, and Boston. Surprisingly, the complaint rate in NYC is relatively low, with only 3,728 complaints per 100,000 residents. This pales in comparison to the 21,616 complaints made by residents of Los Angeles.
HouseFresh collected the data by analyzing 2.3 million sanitation-related 311 calls. According to their methodology, Baltimore, Maryland was named the dirtiest city in America, with a staggering 47,295 sanitation-related complaints. On the other hand, Milwaukee, Wisconsin was deemed the cleanest city in America, with only 309 complaints during the year-long period.
