New $4 Million Vaccine Equity Campaign to Target NYC’s Poorest Neighborhoods
In an exclusive report by Carl Campanile published on November 19, 2023, Mayor Eric Adams’ health team has announced a $4 million “vaccine equity” campaign geared towards curbing infections and deaths from the latest strains of the coronavirus and the flu, specifically in the city’s poorer communities.
The aim of this initiative, led by the Health Department, is to expand vaccine coverage in two dozen predominantly minority neighborhoods with lower vaccination rates. The funds will be allocated to 18 not-for-profit groups to support this effort. Additionally, the campaign includes raising awareness about long COVID and its impact on individuals’ health and wellbeing.
The communities targeted in this multi-million dollar outreach initiative include Bronx neighborhoods such as Mott Haven, Melrose, Charlotte Gardens, and others. In Brooklyn, the campaign will focus on Williamsburg, Cypress Hills, and other areas. Similar efforts will be carried out in Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island as well.
The campaign is part of the Mayor’s Taskforce for Racial Inclusion, which aims to bridge the vaccine inequity gap caused by COVID-19 and other health disparities in these neighborhoods. By targeting communities of color, the city hopes to reduce disparities in disease impact and improve overall health outcomes.
The Health Department is expected to award contracts for this initiative by January 3, 2024, with selected organizations conducting vaccine outreach through June, accompanied by the possibility of an extension. Additionally, the plan involves providing training and guidance on chronic disease prevention and management to address underlying causes of health inequities.
It is an effort to combat the increased risk of adverse health outcomes, particularly long COVID, as new variants of the virus continue to emerge.
