NYC Coroner’s Office Enveloped in Scaffolding for Nearly 15 Years

The city’s blatant disregard for Mayor Eric Adams’ “Get Sheds Down” initiative is particularly frustrating when observing 520 First Avenue, which houses the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. This six-story facility conducts numerous autopsies each week and serves as the final resting place for NYPD officers and FDNY firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty. It is disheartening to witness these fallen heroes being escorted out of the facility under the dark and gloomy sheds that create tunnels along First Ave. and East 30th St. The fact that these sheds continue to stand without any valid reason is perplexing. Department of Buildings records indicate the existence of permits for the sheds dating back to 2009, but there is no evidence of any actual work being done on the building’s facade. It is worth noting that while the OCME website falsely states that the property is part of the NYU Langone medical campus, it is, in fact, owned entirely by the city. NYU Langone staff, who preferred to remain anonymous, have expressed that they have never witnessed any construction work taking place on the OCME building. One hospital executive described the sheds as mere shelters utilized by individuals from a nearby homeless shelter as their outdoor lavatories. Another individual criticized the fact that a prominent medical examiner’s facility is surrounded by unsightly steel pipes, wooden overhangs, and rat traps. An attempt to reach out to OCME for an explanation regarding the long-standing sheds received no response. It is ironic that Mayor Adams has recently launched a campaign to crack down on building owners who erect sidewalk sheds and allow them to persist without completing the necessary facade repairs mandated by Local Law 11. Ironically, the city itself is the biggest perpetrator of this violation. As revealed by The Post’s Howard Husock, NYCHA buildings alone have approximately 26 miles of sheds around them. Last week, we reported that the city-owned office building at 2 Lafayette St. has been surrounded on all sides by sheds for numerous years, with no progress being made.
