A nurse is facing a one-year jail sentence for sexually assaulting an 87-year-old woman with dementia at a senior living facility in Santa Ana. These details were revealed in court records obtained on Monday.
Juan Sandoval, a 35-year-old resident of Orange, pleaded guilty on Tuesday to assault with the intent to commit a sex offense and sexual battery on an institutional victim, both of which are felonies. As part of a plea deal, a felony count of lewd act with a dependent adult by a caretaker was dropped.
Sandoval has been sentenced to 364 days in jail and has been mandated to participate in a sex offender program. He will also be placed on six years of formal probation. Sandoval has until October 13th to report to jail.
The incident was reported to the Santa Ana police on February 25, 2021, at 12:37 p.m. It was alleged that a caretaker at the Sunflower Gardens Senior Living Facility sexually assaulted a resident earlier that day.
Sandoval took the elderly woman into a bedroom where he sexually assaulted her. A co-worker passing by the room witnessed the attack through an open door and confronted Sandoval. He quickly dressed himself and left the room. The co-worker immediately informed a supervisor. When the police arrived, Sandoval was still on duty and was apprehended without any resistance.
There will be legal consequences for his actions. To ensure justice, Sandoval is set to serve his sentence.
