Novak Djokovic emerged triumphant in a thrilling three-set match against world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz, clinching a victory of 5-7, 7-6(7), 7-6(4) at the Western & Southern Open on Sunday.
After almost four hours of grueling tennis, Djokovic celebrated his win by tearing off his shirt, avenging his loss to Alcaraz in the Wimbledon final of the previous month.
The Serbian player struggled in the intense humidity during the first set and appeared to be immobilized when Alcaraz secured the opening set with a backhand winner.
Despite playing over 10 hours during the week, Alcaraz seemed fresh and gained a 4-2 lead in the second set, seemingly on track for an easy victory.
However, Alcaraz’s performance faltered when leading 4-3 in the second set, resulting in four unforced errors that allowed Djokovic to make a comeback.
