Nottingham Forest Assert Satisfaction with Gonzalo Montiel Signing Following Completed Due Diligence, Despite Ongoing Investigation for Alleged Rape

Nottingham Forest has announced the signing of Gonzalo Montiel and assures the public that they have thoroughly assessed the situation and are confident in their decision, despite the ongoing investigation into the player regarding an alleged rape. Montiel is currently being investigated alongside another individual for their involvement in a party incident in January 2019, where a woman claimed to have been raped by three men.

In light of this news, Forest has faced questions from The Athletic regarding the case. The club responded by stating, “We have meticulously conducted our due diligence and after extensive conversations with Montiel’s representatives, we are fully satisfied.” However, The Athletic also reached out to the prosecutor’s office and the alleged victim’s lawyer, who both confirmed that Nottingham Forest had not been in contact with them.

It is worth noting that the investigation into Montiel is ongoing, with the prosecutor in charge of the case affirming its active nature. They are currently in the process of gathering evidence and testimonies, hoping to speak with more individuals present at the party. The alleged victim initially reported the incident to the police in January 2019, but at the time, she could not recall any details about the incident. Consequently, the case was closed when she failed to provide further information upon request. However, the case reopened after the alleged victim made anonymous television appearances, attributing her ability to remember more details to psychological therapy. In her testimony, she specifically identified Montiel as the only person involved in the incident.

Montiel firmly denies any involvement in the alleged crime. According to his statement to prosecutors, he stated that during the night in question, he frequently left the house to gather people and alcohol for the event. At around 6 a.m., he took a sick friend home and upon his return, the alleged victim was upset and blaming him for not looking after her. Montiel claims not to have understood what she meant.

When questioned about the motive behind the allegations, Montiel admitted to being unaware and expressed the deep shame that his family has felt as a result.
