July 14 (UPI) — American Airlines and JetBlue have confirmed that they will begin the process of winding down their Northeast Alliance. Furthermore, they have assured customers that their summer travel itineraries will not be affected.

Starting from July 21, codeshare flights between the two airlines will no longer be available.

Customers with existing flight reservations will need to provide additional information before July 21 in order to earn points and other benefits.

This announcement comes shortly after JetBlue’s decision to end its partnership with American Airlines and focus on its potential merger with Spirit Airlines, another low-cost carrier.

The termination of the Northeast Alliance enables American Airlines, based in Texas, and JetBlue, headquartered in Long Island City, N.Y., to avoid legal complications.

In May, a federal judge ruled that the agreement between the two carriers violated antitrust laws, resulting in its cancellation.

JetBlue accepted the court’s ruling, while American Airlines intends to appeal.

Under the current structure of the Northeast Alliance, both airlines share passengers and revenue while coordinating schedules.

“This is just the initial step in the winding down process, which will occur over the next few months. We will continue working with the JetBlue team to ensure a seamless travel experience for customers with existing codeshare bookings,” stated American Airlines.

JetBlue will now focus on salvaging its proposed $3.8 billion acquisition of Spirit Airlines. The deal, initially announced last year, has faced regulatory obstacles since then.

The company has reassured its customers that the termination of their agreement with American Airlines will not significantly impact already-booked tickets.

“JetBlue and American are collaborating to minimize disruptions for customers who have made travel arrangements. Customers who have booked travel for the upcoming months can remain confident in their plans. If any individual customers are affected, JetBlue will personally reach out to assist with re-accommodation or refunds,” said JetBlue in a statement.
