Premier François Legault of Quebec has given an update on the status of the wildfires in the province, stating that the situation is expected to remain stable over the next 48 hours, but residents displaced by the blazes are unlikely to be able to return home until early next week. As of Thursday, 13,500 people have been evacuated, with a large number of those displaced from Chibougamau and Lebel-sur-Quévillon unable to return until Tuesday at the earliest. The wildfire situation in Quebec is centred in the northern and western regions. In Normetal, SOPFEU, the province’s forest fire prevention agency, said that winds were less strong than anticipated, with seven aircraft working in the area to slow the pace of the blaze. AUTHORITIES are also focusing their efforts on the town of Lebel-sur-Quévillon, where two large fires are close to merging, as well as monitoring the Cree communities of Mistissini and Waswanipi. There have been no reports of injuries or fatalities from the fires, which have spread across 146 locations and consumed over 645,000 hectares.
