Aug. 6 (UPI) — The permanent mission of North Korea to the United Nations described the isolated nation as a “responsible nuclear power,” stating that the United States is generating a threat to international peace, security, and the nuclear non-proliferation regime in a published statement by North Korea’s Foreign Ministry.

According to North Korea, the United States prioritizes the “narrow interests of itself and its allies” on the U.N. Security Council and criticized the AUKUS alliance between the U.S., Britain, and Australia, particularly its provisions regarding Australia’s acquisition of nuclear-powered submarines. Scholars and politicians have criticized the deal as an act of nuclear proliferation.

North Korea accused the U.S. of raising military tension with the establishment of the bilateral Nuclear Consultative Group with South Korea, claiming it has brought relations between the two countries to the highest level in 42 years, bordering on nuclear war.

In July, the White House confirmed the “inaugural meeting” of the Nuclear Consultative Group between the U.S. and South Korea, emphasizing that any nuclear attack by North Korea against the United States or its allies would result in the end of the regime. The group will play a crucial role in discussing and advancing bilateral approaches, including guidelines, to nuclear and strategic planning to counter DPRK aggression.

North Korea alleged that the U.S. and South Korea have been simulating nuclear weapons attacks on North Korea and asserted its right to strengthen its self-defense nuclear deterrent to prevent the outbreak of a nuclear war. It labeled the U.S.’s statements regarding its self-defense measures as a politically motivated provocation aimed at defaming North Korea and deflecting international condemnation from the U.S.’s failure to implement nuclear disarmament and nonproliferation.

North Korea emphasized that it is a responsible nuclear power committed to prohibiting nuclear use and threats against non-nuclear states and preventing nuclear non-proliferation. It stated that its nuclear arsenal poses no threat to countries that respect its sovereignty and security interests.
