North Greenbush Welcomes New Aldi Grocery Store Adjacent to Chick-fil-A

Aldi, the popular supermarket chain, is set to open a new store on North Greenbush Road, right behind the recently opened Chick-fil-A. This location, which shares an entrance with Chick-fil-A, will replace the Aldi store on Columbia Turnpike in the city of Rensselaer. The closure of the older store has been met with protests from city politicians who argue that Rensselaer needs its own supermarket. Despite the pending closure, the Columbia Turnpike store is still partially stocked with items, although some shelves are empty. The exact closure date has not been announced, but recent news reports suggest it will shut down permanently on Wednesday.

Becky Dellavechia, a regular customer who drives in from Castleton, expressed her excitement about the new store and mentioned that the Columbia Turnpike store is in need of replacement. However, she also acknowledged that moving the store to North Greenbush, which is four and a half miles away, may pose challenges for people without vehicles. In an effort to ease the transition, the Columbia Turnpike staff has been distributing $5 coupons to be used at the new North Greenbush store.

The new Aldi market in North Greenbush will officially open on Thursday at 8:30 a.m. with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The store’s website refers to it as being in Rensselaer due to its 12144 ZIP code, which covers Rensselaer, East Greenbush, and parts of North Greenbush. Following the ceremony, customers will be allowed to enter the store, and Aldi is eager to become their preferred grocer.

Despite attempts by political leaders to inquire about this decision, Aldi has not responded. Rensselaer County Legislator Brian Stall expressed disappointment that Aldi did not address their concerns before deciding to close the store. Stall emphasized that many residents who walk to the store will have difficulty affording transportation to other supermarkets without impacting their food budgets. Mayor Michael Stammel echoed the sentiment, affirming the need for a market in the city and expressing confidence in the city’s ability to support it.
