A large group of individuals, consisting of up to 50 people wearing masks and hoodies, vandalized displays and unlawfully took merchandise from the Canoga Park Nordstrom store on Saturday.
This incident of mass shoplifting took place at around 4 p.m. at the store located at 21725 Victory Blvd., in the Westfield Topanga Mall, just east of Topanga Canyon Boulevard. This information was provided by Pedro Muniz, a spokesperson for the Los Angeles Police Department.
A video captured on a cell phone and posted on X shows both male and female suspects hurriedly grabbing clothing and bags from the store and swiftly running away.
Muniz confirms that there were around 30 to 50 individuals involved in this incident.
Despite the commotion, the mall did not have to be evacuated. However, an ambulance was called to the store to treat a male who had been sprayed with bear spray.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass expressed her strong disapproval of the incident, stating, “What occurred at the Nordstrom in the Topanga Mall today is completely unacceptable. Those responsible for this and similar acts in the surrounding areas need to be held accountable.”
Mayor Karen Bass also emphasized that the Los Angeles Police Department will not only make efforts to apprehend those responsible for this incident, but also work on preventing future attacks on retailers.
This incident resembles a “flash mob” robbery that occurred at the Yves Saint Laurent store in the Americana at Brand mall in Glendale on Tuesday around 4:50 p.m., as described by Glendale police.
Sgt. Victor Jackson of the Glendale Police Department stated, “The suspects stole clothing and other merchandise before fleeing on foot and in multiple vehicles. While the investigation is ongoing, the estimated loss is approximately $300,000.”
Jackson further explained that these “flash mob” burglaries involve a large group of coordinated individuals swiftly entering a store, overwhelming staff, and conducting the robbery. The suspects aim to seize as much merchandise as possible before fleeing in multiple vehicles.
The incident at the Yves Saint Laurent store was also captured on video and widely circulated.
