Norco Assemblyman Advocates Stricter Regulations for Legislators Caught Drinking and Driving

Assemblyman Bill Essayli, a representative from the Inland Empire, has put forth a proposal that would impose restrictions on the use of taxpayer-funded vehicles for state legislators who are charged or convicted of driving under the influence. The introduced House Resolution 51 states that any member of the Assembly who is arrested and charged with DUI would lose the privilege of using a “pool vehicle” provided at no cost while in Sacramento until their case is resolved. Additionally, the resolution would mandate a minimum three-year prohibition on access to pool cars following a conviction.

Essayli, who previously worked as a prosecutor, expressed his concern over recent incidents involving legislators and candidates drinking and driving. He emphasized the importance of holding public officials to the highest standards due to the trust placed in them. The Assemblyman’s resolution comes in the wake of a DUI arrest of state Sen. Dave Min, who apologized publicly and is awaiting the disposition of his case.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) has shown support for Essayli’s resolution, as it aligns with their goal of holding convicted DUI offenders accountable. The organization commended the proposed limitation on access to state pool vehicles, along with the requirement of ignition interlocks for all drunk driving offenders. MADD believes these measures will not only ensure accountability among elected officials but also contribute to a much-needed change in dangerous driving behavior.

The resolution is currently awaiting a hearing in the Assembly Rules Committee, which will reconvene on August 14th after the Legislature’s summer recess.
