No Jail Time for Cop Involved in Train Hit on Woman: An Unbelievable Verdict

  • Last year, a handcuffed woman was placed in a patrol car on a marked railroad crossing by police.
  • Within minutes, a train crashed into the car, resulting in nine broken ribs and a broken arm for the woman.
  • This week, a judge ruled that the police officer responsible will not face jail time.

One night in September 2022, a former Colorado police officer stopped a woman suspected of displaying a gun during a road rage incident.

Officer Jordan Steinke handcuffed the woman, 20-year-old Yareni Rios-Gonzalez, according to bodycam footage. Steinke then placed her in the car of another officer, who had parked on a marked railroad crossing.

Moments later, a train collided with the car.

As a result of the crash, Rios-Gonzalez suffered nine broken ribs and a broken arm, as reported by the Denver Post.

“She saw it coming and could hear the horn,” said Paul Wilkinson, attorney for Rios-Gonzalez, in an interview with the Denver Post. “She was trying to get the police officers’ attention, screaming at them. She tried unlocking the door. She had her hands behind her back and was frantically trying to unlock the door.”

The officer responsible for the incident will only receive 30 months of supervised probation and 100 hours of community service, according to a report from CNN.

In July, Colorado Judge Timothy Kerns convicted Steinke of reckless endangerment and third-degree assault, as stated by CNN. However, Kerns did not find her guilty of attempted manslaughter, a felony charge.

“As a police officer, I never intended for another human to come to harm under my watch,” Steinke expressed prior to her sentencing, as reported by CNN. “I feel very much responsible for what happened to you that night. What happened that night has haunted me for 364 days.”
