No End in Sight as Writers’ Strike Reaches 100-Day Mark, Matching 2007-08 Walkout

On its 100th day, the ongoing strike by the Writers Guild of America (WGA) remains unresolved, matching the duration of the previous strike in 2007-2008.

Despite a brief meeting between union leaders and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) last week, there has been little progress towards a resolution. The negotiating teams continue to disagree on important issues, such as success-based residuals for streaming content and the use of artificial intelligence. While the studios have shown some willingness to discuss these matters, no further labor talks have been announced.

The lack of progress is concerning many, including Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, who emphasized the negative impacts of the strike on the local economy and community members. She called for a resumption of contract talks and expressed optimism that a fair resolution could be reached.

The last WGA strike, which lasted from November 2007 to February 2008, cost the local economy billions of dollars. The current strike is expected to have an even greater impact, as it is now accompanied by a strike by the SAG-AFTRA actors union.

In response to the studios’ claims that the strike is having limited impact, the WGA negotiating committee stated that this is “calculated disinformation” and warned against tactics used during the previous strike to weaken their resolve.

Meanwhile, the AMPTP asserted that their only goal is to get people back to work and described the strike as having harmed thousands of individuals in the industry.

The WGA is pushing for improvements in residual pay for streaming programs with high viewership, as well as industry standards for the number of writers assigned to each show, increased foreign streaming residuals, and regulations against the use of artificial intelligence in writing. The AMPTP has pushed back on some of these demands, particularly regarding staffing guarantees and streaming residuals, citing concerns and the need for further discussion.
