Niger junta presents evidence of ‘high treason’ against former president Bazoum for prosecution

Niger’s military council, the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland (CNSP), has announced that it has gathered evidence to prosecute former President Mohamed Bazoum for “high treason” and threatening the internal and external security of the country. Bazoum was ousted in a coup d’état by the presidential guard in July, causing political chaos and international condemnation. In response, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) imposed sanctions and issued an ultimatum to the junta to step down within a week or face potential military intervention. However, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Guinea have expressed solidarity with Niger’s junta, potentially escalating the crisis into a regional conflict. Diplomatic efforts have stalled, but the junta has expressed its willingness to meet with ECOWAS representatives. The visit of a Nigerian delegation to Niger has provided some comfort to the authorities, and the junta believes it will overcome the ECOWAS-imposed sanctions. Bazoum has accused the junta of depriving him of basic needs, but the CNSP denies these claims and states that he receives regular visits from his doctor. ECOWAS has intensified its rhetoric against Niger’s coup leaders and plans to deploy a standby force to restore constitutional order in the country. A parliamentary committee made up of 12 members has been formed to meet with coup leaders. The committee, chaired by Ahmed Idris Wase, the Nigerian first deputy speaker of ECOWAS’ parliament, will hold an internal meeting before meeting with the junta leaders. The junta leader, Gen. Abdourahamane Tchiani, has also approached Mali for support despite its limited military capacity.
