Niger Coup Leaders Announce Intention to Prosecute President Bazoum for Alleged ‘High Treason’

West African Leaders Work to Resolve Niger Coup as New Government Takes Over

In a move toward a peaceful resolution, West African leaders are navigating the recent coup in Niger, while the country’s junta installs a new government. The leaders of the coup announced their intention to prosecute ousted President Mohamed Bazoum for “high treason” and undermining state security. Colonel-Major Amadou Abdramane made this announcement on state television, claiming that the military regime has gathered enough evidence to prosecute Bazoum and his associates, both local and foreign, for their actions. If found guilty, Bazoum could face the death penalty, as per Niger’s penal code.

Since his ousting on July 26, Bazoum has been under house arrest with his family, facing increasing hardships such as the cutting off of electricity and water, and a dwindling food supply. However, a recent visit by his doctor indicated that there are no health concerns for Bazoum and his family.

International pressure is mounting on the military junta to reinstate Bazoum, with the regional bloc ECOWAS imposing sanctions on Niger and threatening military intervention if civilian rule is not restored. Despite a seven-day ultimatum issued by ECOWAS, the new rulers did not back down, indicating a firm grip on power. The junta has also taken steps to consolidate support from the population by exploiting anti-French sentiments, previously over protests to its former colonial ruler.

The African Union Peace and Security Council convened to discuss Niger’s crisis and could potentially overrule the decision if it perceives a threat to peace and security on the continent.
