Former Scottish First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, who was a dominant force in Scottish politics for almost a decade, was taken into custody and questioned for several hours by the Scottish Police on Sunday. The inquiry related to the finances of the governing pro-independence Scottish National Party. Sturgeon was released six hours later without charge, pending further investigation. The British Police do not name suspects until they are charged. Scottish police opened an investigation this year into how £600,000 (around $754,000) designated for a Scottish independence campaign was spent. Two former party officials, Colin Beattie (Treasurer) and Peter Murrell (Chief Executive), were previously detained and interrogated as part of the investigation. Both of them were also released pending further inquiries. Murrell is Sturgeon’s husband, and the police searched the couple’s home in Glasgow after his arrest in April. It is unusual for a former leader or leader of a UK political party to be taken into custody. In February, Sturgeon resigned after serving as the Scottish National Party leader for eight years and Scotland’s first minister of semi-autonomous government. The first female leader of Scotland’s devolved government, Sturgeon transformed the SNP from a one-issue party to a dominant driving force in Scottish politics. However, she left power amid party disagreements and her primary objective, which was independence from the UK, was not fulfilled.
