Three years ago on a Saturday, Thom Brennaman delivered what is considered the worst apology in the history of sports broadcasting. It happened during a baseball game when Nick Castellanos hit a deep drive into left field, resulting in a 3-3 tie. Ironically, exactly three years later, Castellanos hit a home run on the same date, this time a three-run shot to left, in a game between the Phillies and the Nationals. However, the game ended up being a one-sided affair with the Phillies winning 12-3.
Brennaman has not returned to the broadcast booth since he used an anti-gay slur to refer to Kansas City. Despite his absence, the memory of his controversial apology still persists. Castellanos seems to have developed a talent for hitting home runs on August 19th, as he did it again this year.
In his apology, Brennaman expressed deep shame for his comment and extended his sincerest apologies to anyone he may have hurt. He emphasized his faith as he mentioned Castellanos’s home run during the apology.
Interestingly, Castellanos has a knack for hitting home runs during somber moments. He did it a year after the Brennaman incident while a Royals broadcaster was giving a eulogy for George A. Gorman, and last year during a Memorial Day tribute led by Phillies play-by-play man Tom McCarthy.
Fortunately, on this particular Saturday, no serious conversations were taking place before Castellanos’s home run. The Phillies currently hold the first wild card spot in the MLB standings and have a 3 1/2 game lead for a playoff spot.
