JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Nick Bosa, the pride of Florida, is no stranger to thriving in humid conditions – as his standout performance in the 49ers’ 34-3 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday at EverBank Stadium clearly demonstrated.
Despite being on the field for only 37 defensive plays (65 percent), Bosa managed 1.5 quarterback sacks, two hits, two solo tackles – one for a loss – and a forced fumble that he also recovered, along with a pass break up.
“Right when I stepped off the plane, I felt the humidity, and it was just so, so good,” Bosa said following the win. “Truly an extraordinary team win, and a great rejuvenation for us to carry on.”
Bosa’s stat-line in the 49ers’ first eight games of the 2023 NFL season wasn’t particularly explosive, but coach Kyle Shanahan maintained that his performance was impactful. It was only a matter of time before his star player’s numbers reflected as much.
“I thought he was great,” Shanahan said. “I think Nick has been playing great all year.”
Bosa relished in reuniting with Ohio State teammate Chase Young, who is now his 49ers counterpart along the defensive line. The two pass rushers controlled the edges, paving the way for Javon Hargrave and Arik Armstead to make their mark against Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence.
Hargrave had 1.5 sacks and three quarterback hits on Sunday, while Armstead was credited with 0.5 sacks and a quarterback hit.
Armstead pointed out that Bosa has been consistently dominant, despite the scrutiny that comes with a large contract. While his sack totals might not measure up to his 2022 NFL Defensive Player of the Year campaign, Bosa continues to impact the game with numerous pressures on opposing quarterbacks.
