NHS Hospitals Embrace AI in Radiology Departments, as Health Regulator Approves its Deployment

  • Nine AI platforms have received approval in draft guidance from NICE.
  • AI software can ease the workload of radiographers in healthcare settings.

For the first time, AI will be utilized in NHS hospitals as the health regulator has approved its implementation in radiology departments.

Nine artificial intelligence platforms have been given the go-ahead in preliminary guidance from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (Nice).

By creating outlines of healthy organs in lung, prostate, or colorectal cancers, AI software can alleviate the heavy workload of radiographers.

Currently, radiographers manually outline healthy organs on CT or MRI scans.

Nice discovered that AI platforms generally produce contours of similar quality to those done manually, often requiring only minor edits.

The use of this technology could save time, allowing clinicians to spend more time with patients and focus on complex cases.

This is the first instance of Nice recommending the use of AI to support clinicians.

Sarah Byron, program director for health technologies at the public body, stated, “NHS colleagues working in radiotherapy departments are under severe pressure with thousands of people waiting for scans.

“The role of imaging in radiotherapy treatment planning is pivotal, so recommending the use of AI technologies to support treatment planning alongside clinical oversight by a trained healthcare professional could save both time and money.”

Evidence suggests that AI can save between three and 80 minutes per treatment plan, depending on the level of editing required.

Nice estimated that even with a conservative saving of three minutes, doctors could save 3,750 hours per 75,000 treatment plans.
