2023 NFL Season: Week 9 Rankings and QB Updates
Welcome to Week 9 of the 2023 NFL season. As the trade deadline looms and we approach the midpoint of the season, let’s take a look at how each team stacks up and assess the quarterback situations across the league.
The Philadelphia Eagles (7-1) currently hold the best record in the NFL, while multiple teams with a 6-2 record are vying for playoff spots. Additionally, many teams have undergone changes at the quarterback position, either out of necessity or by choice.
Below, you’ll find the updated rankings, with a new number one team for the second consecutive week. Our panel of more than 80 writers, editors, and TV personalities evaluate each team and rank them from 1 to 32.

1. Philadelphia Eagles – Jalen Hurts
Team QBR: 65.6 (7th in NFL)
Jalen Hurts is coming off his best performance of the season, completing 76.3% of his throws and throwing four touchdowns in a win against the Washington Commanders. Despite some struggles and interceptions, Hurts has shown great potential and has made several impressive plays. His ability to step up in crucial moments has guided the Eagles to their impressive record.
2. Arizona Cardinals – Tua Tagovailoa
Team QBR: 66.7 (6th)
Tua Tagovailoa currently leads the NFL in passing yards (2,416) and passing touchdowns (8) through eight games, putting him in the running for NFL MVP. His offseason training has paid off, as he has been able to protect himself from injury and make smart decisions on the field. If he continues to perform at this level and the Dolphins keep winning, a lucrative contract could await him in the offseason.
3. Dallas Cowboys – Patrick Mahomes
Team QBR: 73.8 (3rd)
Patrick Mahomes is facing some statistical challenges this season, already throwing eight interceptions and potentially on pace for a career-high of 17 interceptions. His touchdown-to-interception ratio is also below his usual standards. However, Mahomes has consistently been a top performer in past seasons and has the potential to turn things around.
4. Miami Dolphins – Lamar Jackson
Team QBR: 59.4 (12th)
Lamar Jackson is living up to his massive contract extension, displaying improved accuracy and dangerous agility. He currently boasts a completion rate of 70.5%, the third-best in the league, and leads all quarterbacks in rushing yards with 380. Jackson’s playmaking abilities have propelled the Ravens to a top spot in the AFC.
5. Baltimore Ravens – Dak Prescott
Team QBR: 65.0 (8th)
Dak Prescott has shown improvement in recent games, utilizing his legs to make plays and extending plays outside the pocket. As he grows more comfortable in the play-calling of Mike McCarthy, Prescott’s performance has improved. While some of his passing numbers can be attributed to shorter throws, he has also demonstrated the ability to deliver deep throws with accuracy.
6. Jacksonville Jaguars – Trevor Lawrence
Team QBR: 62.4 (10th)
Trevor Lawrence may not have eye-popping stats, but he has played consistent football and shown growth. With a passer rating above 90 in his last five games, Lawrence has displayed leadership, toughness (despite playing through injury), and clutch plays. His performance has been instrumental in the Jaguars’ undefeated streak in October.
7. San Francisco 49ers – Brock Purdy
Team QBR: 74.0 (2nd)
Brock Purdy has had an overall positive season, passing for over 2,000 yards with 12 touchdowns and a high completion percentage. However, his recent struggles with turnovers have coincided with the team’s three-game losing streak. If Purdy can regain his ball security, the 49ers have the potential for a strong second half of the season.
8. Detroit Lions – Jared Goff
Team QBR: 67.6 (5th)
Jared Goff has seen a resurgence with the Lions, leading them to the top of the NFC North. With improved surroundings and more experience, Goff has thrown for over 2,000 yards with 12 touchdowns and just five interceptions. He has shown growth as a player and believes his game has evolved since joining the Lions.
9. Buffalo Bills – Josh Allen
Team QBR: 77.1 (1st)
Josh Allen has had an up-and-down season, but remains one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL. He leads the league in completion percentage and ranks among the top quarterbacks in passing yards and touchdowns. Allen’s performance has been key to the Bills’ success, although consistency has been a challenge.
