Authorities in Illinois are conducting a search for former N.F.L. player Sergio Brown after his mother was discovered dead near a creek behind her home. The authorities have ruled her death a homicide.
The Maywood Police Department was alerted by the Brown family when they were unable to contact either of them. The police initiated a missing person report and began their search for the individuals.
Maywood, located about 12 miles west of downtown Chicago, is a village with a population of approximately 23,000 residents.
The body of Myrtle Brown, 73, was found near a creek behind her home.
Ms. Brown’s body has been transported to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office, where it was determined that she died from multiple injuries caused by an assault. As of now, it is unclear whether the authorities have made any progress in locating Mr. Brown or if they have received any new leads on his whereabouts.
Carmen Rivera, a public information officer for the Maywood Police Department, stated that she currently has no additional information regarding Mr. Brown beyond the initial news release from Saturday. Nick Brown, Sergio’s brother, reached out to the public on social media to seek their help in finding him.
On Instagram, Mr. Brown wrote a heartfelt message expressing his love for his missing brother Sergio and urging him to come home. He shared that his mother always believed that tough times are temporary and that their last conversation about this serves as his beacon of hope.
According to a neighbor, Carlos Cortez, the police had previously been called to the Brown residence. The family reported Myrtle missing, and Mr. Cortez and others in the community tried to assist the family in their search.
Mr. Cortez mentioned that he had last seen the Browns on Thursday and provided video footage from his doorbell camera to the authorities.
Sergio Brown, 35, played college football at the University of Notre Dame before joining the New England Patriots in 2010 as a defensive back. He also had stints with the Indianapolis Colts, the Jacksonville Jaguars, and concluded his career in the 2016 season with the Buffalo Bills.
