News Corp CEO Robert Thomson: Why AI is ‘Rubbish In, Rubbish Out’

News Corp CEO, Robert Thomson, strongly criticized the left-wing bias and inaccuracies present in AI-generated content. He referred to it as “rubbish in, rubbish out,” while also emphasizing the potential threat that AI poses to jobs in the news industry. Thomson highlighted the fact that left-leaning media giants have been producing stories that are not only error-ridden but also presented with a bias. Even popular search engine ChatGPT regurgitates such content as fact. During his appearance at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia and Technology Conference, Thomson explained that AI is essentially retrospective, relying on permutations of pre-existing content. He warned that the danger lies in the exponential distribution of potentially damaging content. Thomson argued that instead of elevating and enhancing news, AI could lead to a shrinking circle of sanity surrounded by a reservoir of rubbish, resulting in a negative impact on insight. He also mentioned an incident where ChatGPT refused to write a story about Hunter Biden in the style of the New York Post but generated a CNN-like article protecting the president’s son. Thomson expressed concern about AI engines that produce left-wing content, stating that they should not be treated as abstract black boxes. He demanded that companies paying for archived material to train generative AI engines should also compensate publishers for the content created. Thomson cautioned that the news industry, already struggling due to Big Tech giants, faces a damaging wave with the rapid development of AI. Though a coalition has formed to legally challenge AI tech companies, Thomson clarified that News Corp is currently focused on negotiation rather than litigation, aiming to reward journalists rather than lawyers.
