Newly Ordained Auxiliary Bishops in LA Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels: A Momentous Occasion

Four Los Angeles priests ordained as auxiliary bishops of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles by Pope Francis were celebrated in a Mass conducted by Archbishop Jose Gomez on Tuesday.

Selected in July, Msgr. Albert Bahhuth, Father Matthew Elshoff, Father Brian Nunes, and Father Slawomir Szkredka assumed the roles of auxiliary bishops.

During the Mass, Gomez emphasized the significance of an episcopal ordination, stating, “Every episcopal ordination brings us deep into the mystery of the church, into the mystery of God’s plan for the world and for our lives.”

“Brothers, you are called today to become the face of Christ, his presence among the people you serve. What a privilege. What a responsibility. But no bishop stands alone. Jesus says today that as the Father has loved him, so he loves you. You will walk with him in friendship, as shepherds of souls and stewards of God’s mysteries.”

According to the archdiocese, Auxiliary Bishop Bahhuth will act as the episcopal vicar for the San Fernando Pastoral Region; Auxiliary Bishop Elshoff will serve as the episcopal vicar for the Our Lady of the Angels Pastoral Region; Auxiliary Bishop Nunes will fulfill the role of episcopal vicar for the San Gabriel Pastoral Region; and Auxiliary Bishop Szkredka was appointed as the episcopal vicar for the Santa Barbara Pastoral Region.

They join the existing Auxiliary Bishops Alex Aclan and Marc Trudeau.

In previous statements, Gomez expressed that the new bishops “reflect the beautiful diversity of the Catholic community in Los Angeles.”

“We are a church of immigrants, with faithful men and women and families from every continent and many nations. Our ministries and charities are conducted in more than 40 different languages. And as I said, our new bishops embody that diversity,” Gomez said.

“What these four priests have in common is their love for Jesus Christ and their love for their brothers and sisters. Each of them is a man of prayer with a heart for the poor and a deep desire to spread God’s love and serve His people.”
