Newly Developed Robot Promises Less Painful Bowel Cancer Checks for 900,000 Britons

‘Very soft and very pliable’: Flexible robot offers hope of less painful bowel cancer checks to 900,000 Brits

Bowel cancer screenings could become much less painful thanks to the development of a soft robotic device, according to scientists.

Researchers at Imperial College London have created a new type of endoscope that reduces the discomfort typically associated with a colonoscopy.

The device is soft, flexible, and capable of extending and curling on its own inside the body. Clinical trials are now underway to test its effectiveness.

Annually, around 900,000 colonoscopies are performed in the UK for bowel cancer screenings. In over 75% of cases, patients experience significant pain, as reported by Nisha Patel, a consultant gastroenterologist at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust in London, who is running clinical trials with the new device.
