New York City’s Priorities Are All Wrong

In the ever-changing landscape of Gotham, a topsy-turvy world has emerged. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg has taken the perplexing move of prosecuting a police officer who tried to apprehend a serial shoplifter, while Mayor Eric Adams’ team has agreed to a hefty sum of $13 million to be paid to Black Lives Matter protesters for their resistance against the police. This latest development is just one in a series of bewildering choices made by officials who seem to rush to defend and reward wrongdoers, while punishing those who seek to protect the public and their victims. Such a state of affairs raises the question of whether any New Yorker can truly feel safe in a world like this.

Recently, Bragg announced the indictment of NYPD officer Salvatore Provenzano for a single punch thrown during an incident two years ago at an Apple Store on the Upper West Side. Surprisingly, this punch caused no injuries, yet Bragg saw it fit to press charges against the officer. This is not an isolated incident, as Bragg has previously pursued charges against innocent New Yorkers who had to defend themselves against dangerous individuals on the streets. It is worth noting that while Bragg is taking these actions, Mayor Eric Adams’ administration has reached an agreement to pay Black Lives Matter protesters a significant amount of $13 million for their resistance against the police.

Last year, Bragg attempted to bring a murder charge against bodega worker Jose Alba, despite surveillance footage clearly showing that Alba was attacked first and acted in self-defense. However, under pressure, Bragg eventually backed down. In May, Daniel Penny was arraigned on manslaughter charges for dealing with a homeless man who posed a threat to subway riders. Similarly, in the case of Jordan Williams, a subway passenger who defended himself and his girlfriend against an unhinged ex-convict, Bragg charged Williams with stabbing the assailant, despite a grand jury ruling that it was an act of self-defense. Lastly, just this month, Bragg charged Scotty Enoe, a CVS employee, with the stabbing death of a serial shoplifter during a scuffle inside a Midtown Manhattan store.

Bragg’s consistent indictment of Alba, Neely, Penny, Jordan, and Enoe reveals a clear disregard for New Yorkers who defend themselves and others against violent instigators. Now, to add to this troubling pattern, a police officer is being charged with a crime for simply carrying out his duty. When coupled with the massive $13 million payout to protesters who resisted the police during the Black Lives Matter demonstrations in 2020, it becomes evident which side New York officials align themselves with. These payments amount to almost $10,000 per protester, totaling 1,300 individuals. Recall that these protests occurred amidst the significant property damage caused during the “mostly peaceful” George Floyd demonstrations nationwide that summer. The message being sent by officials is clear: criminals receive protection, while law enforcement and victims of crime face punishment. This misguided approach will inevitably lead to an increase in crime on our streets. Is that truly what officials desire?
