Regardless of the political challenges involved, Adams must demand this action to protect his city. The Mayor should make it clear that enough is enough. Instead of asking for more funds, he should demand that the Biden administration closes the border. Additionally, New York has reached its capacity to accommodate illegal migrants, so they must be relocated elsewhere. It is crucial to fully eliminate the “right to shelter” law that hampers the city. Adams should also urge fellow Democrats in Washington, D.C., to take a firm stand against the administration’s stubbornness on this issue. While appeals to New York’s proud tradition of welcoming immigrants are admirable, without concrete actions to address the illegal border crossings and the growing crisis within New York, the city’s future is grim. There won’t be much left to welcome anyone if this issue is not resolved soon.
