New York City’s Looming Migrant Crisis: Urgent Border Closure Needed to Safeguard the City’s Future

The latest budget numbers regarding Gotham’s migrant crisis have been released, and they are much worse than anticipated. These numbers make it abundantly clear that simply pouring money into the problem will not solve it. The costs will continue to skyrocket, and the people of New York will have to bear the burden indefinitely. However, there is a solution available to Mayor Eric Adams: he must change his approach. The Mayor should demand a complete closure of the border and, in the meantime, revoke the automatic right to shelter for illegal immigrants and find alternative solutions for them. On Wednesday, Adams revealed new projections that estimate the overall cost of sheltering, feeding, clothing, and providing medical care for illegal migrants to reach a staggering $12 billion by the end of fiscal year 2025. To put that in perspective, this figure is nearly equivalent to the combined budgets of New York’s Parks Department, Sanitation Department, and the FDNY. The projections for the following years, 2024 and 2025, are even higher, at $4.7 billion and $6.1 billion respectively. These numbers have increased significantly from the initial estimates of $2.9 billion and $1.0 billion. It’s important to note that the projection for 2025 assumes a complete halt in the influx of migrants, which is highly unlikely. This means that the city will require an additional $7 billion on top of what is already needed. Unless there is substantial federal intervention to secure the border, New Yorkers will likely face service cuts. Adams primarily focused on the city’s historical openness to immigrants and emphasized the need for more aid from the federal government. This stance is not unjustified considering the Biden administration’s role in creating this crisis. Ever since President Biden took office, our southern border has been under immense strain as millions of migrants pour in, overwhelming both border towns and New York City. However, relying solely on increased federal funding will only delay the inevitable. The only effective solution is to reverse Biden’s open-border policy. Regardless of the political challenges involved, Adams must demand this action to protect his city. The Mayor should make it clear that enough is enough. Instead of asking for more funds, he should demand that the Biden administration closes the border. Additionally, New York has reached its capacity to accommodate illegal migrants, so they must be relocated elsewhere. It is crucial to fully eliminate the “right to shelter” law that hampers the city. Adams should also urge fellow Democrats in Washington, D.C., to take a firm stand against the administration’s stubbornness on this issue. While appeals to New York’s proud tradition of welcoming immigrants are admirable, without concrete actions to address the illegal border crossings and the growing crisis within New York, the city’s future is grim. There won’t be much left to welcome anyone if this issue is not resolved soon.
