New Warning About Bears Raises Alarm Among Yosemite Hikers

Visitors to Yosemite National Park should prepare for some unexpected company during their climb up Half Dome. It appears that bears have now begun scaling the famous landmark. Half Dome is such a sought-after hike in the summer that permits are distributed through a lottery system. However, the park has offered a solution on its Facebook page: “Be a bear.” Rangers recently found evidence of a black bear on the summit of Half Dome.

Half Dome, rising 8,839 feet, is not only one of the park’s most popular hikes, but also one of the most challenging. The final 400 feet are at a daunting 46-degree angle and require the use of cables embedded in the rock. However, bears have no need for the cables. They are excellent climbers and can easily conquer the steep slope without any assistance.

The park’s post serves as a reminder for visitors to store scented items, especially food, in bear lockers or canisters. This advice applies both on and off Half Dome. Yosemite bears have a knack for opening car doors in the Valley if they catch a whiff of something tasty. Squirrels and other wildlife will also attempt to access visitors’ food if given the opportunity. These animals will swiftly approach unattended bags and are likely to leave a few new holes before they are noticed.

Yosemite is home to 300-500 black bears who will go to great lengths to obtain human food. The park website warns that if food is left in a car, bears will break windows, bend car frames, and even enter the passenger area to access the trunk. The recent report indicates that they are even willing to climb 400 feet of a rock dome in their search for a snack.

“For the safety of people and animals alike, keep your friends close and your food closer,” advises the park’s latest post.
