New UN Climate Chief Warns: Extreme Messaging from Doom-monger Eco Activists like Just Stop Oil and Extinction Rebellion is Hindering the Global Fight against Global Warming

The UN’s newly appointed climate chief, Professor Jim Skea, has expressed his concerns about eco activists and their controversial public demonstrations, stating that they are “paralysing” the fight against global warming. Professor Skea, who is also a physicist from Imperial College London, believes that these activists, such as Just Stop Oil and Extinction Rebellion, fail to motivate the public to take action to protect the planet. He has also stated that a 1.5°C increase in global temperatures is not an existential threat to humanity.

These comments come in light of recent disruptions caused by Just Stop Oil protesters, who invaded the Lord’s pitch during the Ashes cricket match and threw orange powder into the air. However, the protesters deny causing any disruption. Just Stop Oil works towards persuading the government to halt new fossil fuel licensing and production.

Professor Skea, who was recently elected chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), spoke with the German news agency DPA about the importance of not constantly communicating a message of doom and gloom regarding climate change. He believes that offering positive ways for humanity to address climate challenges is critical and that people have agency over their own future.

The 69-year-old IPCC veteran highlights that governments have a range of tools at their disposal to reduce planet-heating emissions and emphasizes the need for action. He is not the only prominent climate figure to reject the tactics of activist groups. Swampy, a veteran eco-warrior, suggests that real change will come from working with people from different walks of life and holding companies accountable for environmental damage.

Both Just Stop Oil and Extinction Rebellion have been involved in disruptive demonstrations in recent months, including protests at Wimbledon, the Ashes, and the world snooker championship. Their demonstrations often involve blocking roads, causing inconvenience and delays for the general public.

In relation to the recent incident at Lord’s, three Just Stop Oil protesters, Daniel Knorr, Judit Murray, and Jacob Bourne, appeared in court and denied obstructing or disrupting a lawful activity.

Overall, Professor Skea believes that it is important to convey a positive and empowering message when addressing climate change and that action needs to be taken to combat global warming.
