New presenters revealed by RTÉ for Six One and Nine O’Clock News

From today, journalist Sharon Tobin will be joining David McCullagh as the new permanent presenting team for the flagship Six One News. Broadcaster Ray Kennedy, who acknowledged the challenge of filling Eileen Dunne’s shoes, will rotate with Sharon Ní Bheolain to present the Nine O’Clock News. Sharon Tobin, who has been with RTÉ since 2008 as a journalist and reporter, expressed her excitement about joining the team and addressing the pressing issues faced by the country, such as the cost of living and affordable housing. She is determined to bring accurate and trustworthy news to the audience while asking the questions that people want answers to.

In addition to her news presenting role, Sharon Tobin has co-presented the annual Budget coverage on RTÉ, hosted Monday Night Live, and presented RTÉ News specials, including President Biden’s visit to Ireland. She has also accumulated experience as a TV3 news anchor, radio host, and journalist for regional newspapers like the Liffey Champion and Show Business Weekly in New York.

Joining the Nine O’Clock News team, Ray Kennedy started working with RTÉ in 2008 and previously served as Ireland Correspondent with Sky News for almost five years. In his statement, Kennedy expressed his honor and aspiration to bring the news from Ireland and around the world to people’s living rooms. Drawing on his 30+ years of journalism experience, he aims to continue the legacy of Eileen Dunne while delivering high-quality news.

Both Sharon Tobin and Ray Kennedy have been recognized for their outstanding journalism. Kennedy was shortlisted for Amnesty International Media Awards for his reports on poverty in Brazil before the Rio Olympics and won the television journalist category in the Justice Media Awards in 2016 for his coverage of the Gorse Hill repossession case. He has also worked as a reporter for TV3, the Irish Independent, and the Irish Press newspaper groups.

Deirdre McCarthy, the Director of RTÉ News and Current Affairs, emphasized the importance of these programs as the most watched and esteemed television shows, representing RTÉ’s commitment to newsgathering and public service journalism. McCarthy praised the presentation team’s dedication to honesty, integrity, and credibility in delivering stories that matter to the audience, their families, and their communities. She described the newest permanent presenters, along with Eileen Whelan of the One O’Clock News, as accomplished journalists who will continue to hold those in power accountable and represent the public interest.
