According to a recent poll, Americans have identified opioids and obesity as the primary threats to public health, ranking COVID-19 lower on the list. The Axios-Ipsos poll revealed that 26 percent of Americans consider opioids and fentanyl to be the greatest public health threat, closely followed by 23 percent who view obesity as a significant concern. Additionally, 20 percent listed access to firearms as the top threat, while 11 percent mentioned cancer.
Interestingly, only 2 percent of Americans consider COVID-19 to be the most significant threat. This is surprising since there has been a surge in COVID-19 cases this summer, with some regions experiencing a tripling of hospitalizations due to the virus.
The poll also revealed that only about a third of Americans consistently practice social distancing or wear masks. These results highlight the need for greater adherence to safety protocols.
Furthermore, the poll demonstrated that views on public health threats varied along political lines. Republicans tended to emphasize opioids and obesity as their primary concerns, whereas Democrats were more focused on gun deaths.
Education level also played a role in determining which threat individuals considered to be the most significant. Those with a high-school level education or lower expressed greater concern about opioids, while those with college degrees were more worried about obesity.
Additional findings from the poll indicate that while over three-quarters of respondents reported their overall health to be “good,” only around 30 percent or less rated their diet, physical health, and personal finances as “very good.”
The poll, conducted from August 11-14, involved 1,162 adults and has a sampling error margin of plus or minus 3 percentage points at a 95 percent confidence level.
It is evident that public opinion regarding the greatest threats to public health differs, with opioids and obesity standing out as major concerns among Americans. Addressing these issues effectively will require a multifaceted approach encompassing education, awareness, and policy changes.
