During a recent visit to India by NASA Administrator Bill Nelson, partnerships between the US and India’s space agency, the Indian Space Research Organization, were solidified. Nelson announced that NASA will prepare an Indian astronaut for an imminent mission to the International Space Station. Although a specific timeline for the flight has yet to be determined, he indicated that it could take place as early as next year.
In addition to astronaut training, the US and India will join forces to launch a new Earth observation satellite in the first quarter of 2024. Dubbed NISAR, or NASA ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar, this mission is designed to examine the planet’s ecosystems, water, and other natural resources in an effort to combat climate change.
Nelson’s visit, part of a broader effort by the Biden administration to enhance bilateral cooperation on technology and innovation projects between the two nations, expanded upon previous agreements between the space agencies. The goal is to collaborate on projects related to Earth science, space exploration, technology, and innovation.
India has emerged as a significant player in the new global space race, with ambitions to build its own space station in orbit in the coming years, as well as launch crewed missions to the moon. Notably, the country made history in August by successfully landing the uncrewed Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft on the moon, becoming the first to reach the lunar south pole.
