Changes have been made to the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, which now includes the right to a healthy environment as a law. The federal government has been working on this legislation for several years and introduced the latest version in the Senate in February. The updated Act guarantees every Canadian the right to a healthy environment and makes it the duty of the government to protect that right. The government now has up to two years to define how this right will be implemented for enforcing the act. Critics argue that enshrining this right in the Constitution would make the law stronger, but the government is not pursuing that change.
The updated law also includes changes to how toxic substances are assessed, requiring the search for safer alternatives and consideration of cumulative effects and long-term cancer risks when combined with other substances.
The bill has passed in the House of Commons and the Senate and requires royal assent to become official.
