Chris Pratt has stepped into a new role, leaving his plumber uniform behind for something a bit furrier in the debut trailer for Columbia Pictures and Alcon Entertainment’s The Garfield Movie.
The beloved lasagna-loving cat returns with Pratt embodying the role in this nearly three-minute sneak peek (below) at the film inspired by Jim Davis’ iconic Garfield comic series.

The movie follows Garfield, “the world-famous, Monday-hating, lasagna-loving indoor cat,” as he embarks on an unexpected outdoor adventure after reconnecting with his long-lost father, Vic, a scruffy street cat voiced by Samuel L. Jackson. Accompanied by his canine pal Odie, Garfield is thrust from his pampered life into a humorous, high-stakes heist as he joins his father on this wild journey.
The trailer hints at the story of an abandoned kitten fighting for survival on the streets until he spots a lonely man, Jon Arbuckle, through a restaurant window. The wide-eyed kitten is eventually invited in by Jon for a treat, ending up devouring an entire restaurant. “And that’s how I adopted Jon,” Pratt’s Garfield tells the audience.
The rest of the trailer shows Garfield navigating the ups and downs of being Jon’s cat, including baths and blow-dries, all while maintaining his insatiable appetite. “I apologize in advance. The eating you are about to see will not be pretty,” Garfield says. “If you have young children, this would be a good time for them to leave the room.”
The action-packed trailer also features the unexpected reunion with Vic, “my father,” as Garfield puts in air quotes. It shows the two cats and Odie barely surviving a speeding train car, RV, moose, and tree before the indoor cat brings Vic back to Jon’s for a taste of city life.
Hannah Waddingham, Ving Rhames, Nicholas Hoult, Cecily Strong, Harvey Guillén, Brett Goldstein, and Bowen Yang also star in the animated film, directed by Mark Dindal and written by Paul A. Kaplan, Mark Torgove, and David Reynolds.
The film is produced by John Cohen, Broderick Johnson, Andrew A. Kosove, Steven P. Wegner, Craig Sost, Namit Malhotra, and Crosby Clyse. Davis and Reynolds, along with Bridget McMeel, Scott Parish, Carl Rogers, Simon Hedges, Chris Pflug, Louis Koo, Steve Sarowitz, Justin Baldwin, and Peter Luo, serve as executive producers. DNEG Animation is behind the film’s animation.
The Garfield Movie will hit theaters on May 24, 2024.
