New EU rules prompt Google to pledge increased transparency on ads

BRUSSELS – Google has announced that it will enhance its compliance with the European Union’s Digital Services Act (DSA) by providing more information on targeted advertisements and granting researchers greater access to data on its products.

The DSA, which will be implemented on Friday, imposes more stringent obligations on major tech companies like Google in terms of addressing issues such as child sexual abuse material, disinformation, transparency on algorithms and targeted advertisements, and the removal of illegal or unsafe products on their platforms.

In response to these requirements, Google plans to expand its Ads Transparency Center to meet the DSA provisions and provide additional information on targeting for ads served in the European Union. The company also aims to increase data access for researchers studying the functionality of Google Search, YouTube, Google Maps, Google Play, and Shopping, as well as conducting research on systemic content risks in the EU.

Furthermore, Google will improve its content moderation decisions by providing more visibility and offering users
