Yevgeny Prigozhin, the leader of the Wagner Group, has delivered a fresh audio message following the fallout between his mercenary group and the Russian government. In a recent Telegram post, Prigozhin expressed his gratitude to those who supported him and his group during their attempted rebellion against the Kremlin.
“I want to emphasize that our ‘March of Justice’ was dedicated to fighting traitors and galvanizing our society,” Prigozhin conveyed in his audio message. “I am confident that you will witness our upcoming triumphs on the front. Thank you, guys!”
Last month, Prigozhin called for an armed uprising to remove Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and challenged Russian President Vladimir Putin’s rationale for the ongoing conflict with Ukraine. However, Prigozhin eventually ordered his private army to halt its advancement after reaching an agreement. As part of the deal, Russia would drop its charges against him for leading an armed rebellion, and he would relocate to Belarus.
In a previous Telegram post, Prigozhin clarified that he ordered his group to cease their progress to avoid a civil war on Russian soil. He refuted claims that he was attempting a coup.
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, who mediated between the two parties, revealed that he persuaded Putin not to “eliminate” the Wagner Group. “The situation itself was not the most alarming; it was the potential consequences that concerned me the most,” Lukashenko remarked in a statement. “I also recognized that a hasty decision was made to eliminate those involved.”
Lukashenko added, “I proposed that Putin should exercise restraint. I suggested that I engage in dialogue with Prigozhin and his commanders.”
