In celebration of the 20th anniversary of their iconic pumpkin spice latte, Starbucks is introducing a new pumpkin drink to their menu this fall.

Starting this Thursday, customers can enjoy the iced pumpkin cream chai latte alongside the returning pumpkin cream cold brew, which has been a favorite for five years.

This seasonal addition is a response to the shifting preferences of Starbucks’ customers, who are increasingly choosing cold beverages over hot ones, regardless of the weather. This trend is especially prominent among younger consumers, including those in the Gen Z cohort. Last fall, cold drinks made up more than three-quarters of Starbucks’ beverage sales.

Moreover, Starbucks’ upscale Reserve locations, known for serving alcohol as well, will also be featuring special pumpkin spice drinks for the first time. The Reserve fall menu will include a pumpkin spice espresso martini that capitalizes on the popularity of espresso martinis, as well as a pumpkin spice whiskey barrel-aged iced latte.

Although the iced pumpkin cream chai latte is officially making its debut on the menu, it has been available to customers for years by simply adding pumpkin cream cold foam to their iced chai lattes. This “secret menu” drink gained significant traction on TikTok, where baristas and customers frequently share their personalized creations.

“Due to the immense popularity of the iced pumpkin cream chai latte, we have decided to officially include it on the menu this year,” stated Starbucks spokesperson Erin Stan during a press event.

By paying attention to how customers customize their orders, Starbucks is able to introduce “new” beverages that are likely to resonate with a wider audience. This strategy has been successful in the past, as evidenced by the introduction of the pink drink, which originated from customer requests for strawberry acai refreshers with coconut milk. The pink drink is now available by name in Starbucks cafes and grocery stores.

In addition to the iced pumpkin cream chai latte, Starbucks will also be unveiling the iced apple crisp oat milk shaken espresso, a seasonal twist on their popular iced brown sugar oat milk shaken espresso.
